It’s day 2 of Ingenium 2018 and it seems like the sunny weather is here to stay!  Today we welcomed a few more inspirational tutors on the music staff team, who were really keen to meet and work with our talented young musicians.

 

 

Taking advantage of the nice sunshine we decided to start the morning outside on the field with a relaxing warm up session led by two of our pastoral members of staff. Breathing in the fresh air we enjoyed a session of mindfulness and body awareness getting us ready for the day ahead.

 

 

Full of inspiration, our young composers started the day by deciding on a set of rules that would form the basic layer for their compositions. From that, they created their own melodic ideas and discussed how to write variations on those themes.

 

 

The two new music staff members that joined us today were Matt Sharp (English National Opera, London Philharmonic Orchestra) and Rebecca Dinning (Carducci Quartet, Heath Quartet). They coached all the chamber ensembles, bringing energy and sharing their expertise on what makes a successful chamber musician.

 

 

The conductors worked on their baton technique, making the most of the sunshine outside in the beautiful surroundings of Winchester, whilst the pianists had taster sessions on the harpsichord with Joe McHardy (London Handel Orchestra, Komische Oper Berlin).

 

 

In the afternoon we all had the chance to learn about Alexander Technique with visiting specialist Joe Sanders and then joined Matt Sharp for a journey of self-discovery, learning more about improvisation.

 

For Musicianship, the composers had an introduction to conducting session with Tim Redmond. With the help of Peter Davies (Royal Opera House), they conducted their own pieces, learning how to approach their compositions from a conductor's point of view and how to lead them.

 

 

The day finished with a fun filled choc-olympics activity. Our students used their creativity and team work in sweet challenges such as chocolate eating games and creating the tallest tower made out of spaghetti and marshmallows. The students ended with a classical English tradition – the “After Eight challenge”, trying to get an After-Eight chocolate from their forehead into their mouth without using their hands!

Darius: for a productive lesson and for engaging in all activities and learning from others as well as being really polite and a pleasure to be around!

Andrew: for the flute piece he composed today, and for creating truly stunning music.

Maxime: for being a team player and incredibly empathetic towards the needs of other composers.
