21st July 2019

What a day it's been!

Our students in beautiful Oxford

Our students were up earlier than usual for a quick breakfast and then straight on the coach, all equipped with a packed lunch, to head to Oxford for our end of week concert. The buzz and excitement was evident as soon as we boarded, and we were all excited to see what would unfold.

Having arrived in Oxford we took a tour of the historic city and its sights, from the Bodleian Library to the Carfax Tower and even a British post box from the Victorian period! We were also lucky enough to be allowed into Wadham College to see the quad, chapel and gardens.

Our students enjoying the sights in Oxford

After having free time to explore the quaint high streets and take lots of postcard pictures, it was time to head to the famous Holywell Music Room and rehearse. Our chamber coaches Tamar Andruiser and Simon Callaghan were on standby to give some final words of encouragement, reinforcing the importance of projecting to the back of the hall and enjoying their performance.

Rehearsing in the Holywell Music Room

It was soon time to let our friendly audience in to take their seats, our musicians ready to give everything they could. It was safe to say they did too, everything from Ingrid’s beautiful Debussy to spellbinding Dvorak courtesy of our ‘Dumky’ Trio. We heard world premières from all our young composers performed by their friends in the chamber groups, and even our pastoral staff joined in to bring our composers’ sensational works to life. The programme held something for everyone, and the students did themselves proud with first class performances all round.

Everyone was quick to congratulate each other upon the end of a great concert: students, staff and audience alike. It was then quickly back to the coach to head back to Winchester for dinner and our last whole school meeting of the week, in which we handed out certificates and awards for those sadly leaving us on Sunday and gathered together one last time to reflect on a successful first week of Ingenium 2019.

And that’s a wrap on this year’s Overture Week! We are so proud to see what our young musicians have already achieved in just one week.

Stay tuned for the start of Week 1, where we expand in numbers and courses! It’s going to be epic.
