It's concert day in Winchester!
The choir singing Toy Story 2's 'When She Loved Me'
Final preparations for today’s musical showcase were full steam ahead, with all our groups taking it in turns to get accustomed to the large concert space and run-through. It was an opportunity to tighten up any final tricky passages, ready to share our week's work with an audience at the end of the day.
Our fantastic cello section
Pianists had further individual lessons, and the wonderful Adam Saunders joined us for jazz piano sessions, taking students in small groups for lessons in jazz harmony and piano technique. Meanwhile, our conductors focussed further on rehearsal technique and intention, ready to take on the challenge of leading the orchestra and choir in realising student compositions on Saturday.
After lunch it was time to change into concert blacks and head down to the concert hall, everyone looking immaculate and professional. Last minute run-throughs and words of encouragement from our director and pastoral team gave the students a burst of motivation before we let our audience of friends and family into the hall.

With everyone finally in their seats and the students ready, the concert got under way. Every performance was a joy to watch, with students going above and beyond the limits with what they have learned this week. Some highlights included the Saxophone Ensemble’s rendition of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, Rossini's Thieving Magpie Overture from our orchestra, some breathtaking piano solos and the choir finishing off the concert with Dolly Parton’s I Will Always Love You. Our composers also premiered their pieces from the week with our pastoral staff performers, their creativity and commitment to ideas coming through in abundance. There were smiles all round as the last notes were played and the audience applauded.

After meeting friends and family, it was time to head to our weekly barbecue where the students celebrated their efforts, relaxed and of course enjoyed some good food! There were games of cricket and rounders between our students and staff, and awards for the people who were sadly leaving us this evening - all in all a lovely way to end the week.
Fun and games at the Friday barbecue
But week 1 is not yet over! We have lots more to come in our final day of the week, so be sure to check back in tomorrow to find out.
