Composing at the Ingenium Academy international composition summer course

Our composition programme is for 14–18 year old composers of all levels with a passion for writing and discovering new music, and an interest in developing their technique.

Under the guidance of some of the UK’s foremost composers, musicians and specialist teachers, the week-long programme will give students the opportunity to work on individual pieces in their preferred style, and to broaden their appreciation and understanding of different genres and techniques of composition.

Tutors will cover topics including style, instrumentation, theme and structure, as well as specific techniques such as harmony and counterpoint. The course will include both one-to-one sessions and group workshops where students can share their ideas. Our composers will have access to an individual practice room to work on their compositions, and a computer suite with Sibelius notation software.

Visiting instrumental teachers will lead in-depth sessions about their instrument, and composers will have the rare opportunity to ask questions about writing for professional musicians. Students can also collaborate with young musicians from our chamber music, conducting and piano programmes, and will join friends from other programmes to participate in musicianship sessions covering a wide range of subjects, from improvisation to folk music.

The Composition programme will run from 18 July - 1 August 2021. Students can attend for one or two weeks.
